  5. Dermatographic Uticariahot and coldworked glass “manicured” fingernails2011
This is my newest work!!! I’m excited to hear responses. They’ve come a long way in the coldworking…..I’m also working on a second set in a different color and hopefully with a pattern on them. Nails turned out to be a great subject, as I’m really fascinated by the possibility of making them out of a precious and more permanent material, like glass, rather than painted-on acrylic goo or glued on plastic rhinestones. It’s funny how women will pay good money to don these body extensions that make work with the hands nearly impossible. The context they are placed in is also really important to me; this photograph focuses on them in conjunction with a skin condition that I have, Dermographic Uticaria, which makes my skin very sensitive to even the smallest brush or scratch.  The contrast between the pretty nails and the scratches is, to me, a remark about real life bodies vs. society’s desire to chase perfect beauty.  Dermatographic Uticariahot and coldworked glass “manicured” fingernails2011
